This gives students an idea of what they are good at and what they need to improve on. Judges also leave comments on the score sheet. These are then divided into subcategories to identify what students need to improve on based on points lost. Students who perform are scored based on categories such as accuracy, tone, technique, and interpretation. The new feedback makes students better at their instruments. Petrocelli explained that advice from NYSSMA is usually more helpful because the judges are more skilled at the instrument they’re judging. For levels five and higher, scores are out of 100 points.Ī level one piece is considered the lowest difficulty for a student while levels five and six are the most difficult.īand conductor Mr. For levels one to four, scores are out of 28 points. Scores vary based on the level students are performing. Judges then give students a score, and students usually receive their score sheets a few weeks after the event. Once a song is chosen, please fill out the application (link above) and return it with payment to the School’s NYSSMA Coordinator as indicated above on the registration form.Music students performed at the NYSSMA Solo Festival on Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6. Students who are interested in going to either festival should prepare early and work with a music teacher to choose a piece from the NYSSMA manual. It is not necessary to attend both the All-State festival and the NYSSMA festival. Students who opt to perform an All-State solo will also receive comments and a score and will be eligible for All-County. The difference between the All-State Conference and the NYSSMA Festival is that students who choose to compete at the All-State Festival will be considered for selection to the All-State Chorus, which takes place during the NYSSMA conference in late November or early December. Students enrolled in 10th or 11th grade are permitted to audition for an NYSSMA Conference All-State music group. Students are generally notified in early winter if they have been selected. The scores generated at the NYSSMA festival are submitted to the Nassau Music Educators’ Association (NMEA) in September for consideration. Students who are interested in performing a solo for an adjudicator in order to receive feedback with comments, as well as a numerical score, should consider attending this festival.Īttending the NYSSMA festival in the spring is the only way to be considered for the NMEA sponsored All-County Festival the following January.
